Canada: Pet sitter fined, pit bull euthanized after letter carrier attacked

CANADA -- A pit bull that severely bit a Canada Post mailman a week ago has been euthanized by SPCA officials, say Gatineau Police.

The postal worker went to the front door of a home on St. Louis Road on Feb. 5 and was met by a man taking care of the dog. When the door opened the pit bull attacked the postal worker, biting him several times on the legs and calves.

“The dog jumped on the guy and he didn’t have a chance to protect himself,” said Gatineau Police spokesman Pierre Lanthier.

He said the dog was brought to the SPCA and a decision was made to euthanize the animal on Monday. He said the dog’s owner did not want to keep the animal any longer.

Lanthier said the man looking after the pit bull was fined $294 because of the attack on the postal worker and for failing to control the animal.

“The (dog) owner wasn’t there at the time,” said Lanthier.

The name of the man who was fined is not being released, he said.
