Horse left to suffer for days; owner arrested

IOWA -- A northern Iowa man accused in a case of animal neglect has a long history of similar charges.

Eighty-nine-year-old Ralph Stricker was arrested Tuesday after a horse was spotted on his property, lying in the same spot for more than 24-hours.

[Another news site said readers stated the horse was a pregnant mare and had lain in the field for more than 2 days, unable to rise to its feet.]

Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s deputies had to put the horse down because of its declining condition.

Deputies say this incident is the worst they’ve seen.

“Well it hurts us as well, we hate to see animals suffer, and we have a hard time just sitting here watching this horse be like this,” says Deputy Brian Koob.

Stricker is charged with animal neglect, which is a simple misdemeanor.

Deputies say they’ve responded to Stricker’s property dozens of times in the past few years on reports of loose cows and horses.

Ralph Adam Stricker
Court records show he was charged in 2007 with animal neglect, cruelty to animals and livestock neglect a total of 14 times.
