Pit bull attacks its owner after he made the mistake of trying to pet it

TEXAS -- A dog reportedly bit his owner in his car during the morning rush hour, prompting him to call police.

Officials with Animal Services say the dog, a pit bull terrier mix, has been taken into their custody.

They said the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Monday on Montana Avenue and Lee Trevino Drive when the man took his dog to the vet.

The owner says he went to pet the dog in the front passenger seat and that the dog went wild, biting his arm.

The man pulled over, got out of the car and called for help. Officials said he refused to be transported via ambulance to the hospital.

At the scene, the man said he wanted to be taken by his wife to the hospital instead.

His whole arm is said to be bandaged, and he was also bitten in the hand.

Animal Services says this type of behavior is preventable.

"If there's a slight personality change on the dog, it's best to contact your vet. Best thing to do is also interact with your dog," Hugo Navarro with Animal Services, said.

Animal services also said to crate your dog when driving.

The dog owner was cited for not having the animal microchipped, animal services officials said.

An official also said it will euthanize the dog.
