Vet bills mount for Salisbury Township woman whose dog survived pit bull attack

PENNSYLVANIA -- A Salisbury Township woman is seeking the public's help to pay for her dog's mounting vet bills after the pit bull attack that nearly killed him.

Tammie Jesberger's cockapoo, Oreo, underwent emergency surgery after the Feb. 4 attack. He's on the mend, but must visit the vet's office two to three times each week for additional care and pain medication, Jesberger's attorney Thomas Newell said.

A male pit bull broke Oreo's jaw and tore his throat, Newell said. For three weeks after the attack, tubes inserted to drain blood from his wounds had to be emptied on a regular basis, he said.

Jesberger's vet bills have surpassed $3,000 and she is hopeful the community will come to her aid by making donations to an account at Wells Fargo Bank, Newell said.

"It's a horrible situation. This poor little dog is traumatized tremendously," he said.

Township police shot and killed the pit bull after it attacked Jesberger, her father, William Tittel, and Oreo. Another pit bull was present during the attack, but did not participate, police said.

Both dogs belong to Montreal Howard, an Allentown man who has been cited for violating a township ordinance governing animals. He has not been charged under the state dog law, but police are still investigating the attack.

The dogs had escaped Howard's home and were wandering the neighborhood when one of them attacked Jesberger in the 1400 block of Pearl Street. Jesberger and Tittel required medical treatment for their injuries, as well, but right now are focused on making sure Oreo gets well, Newell said.
