SOUTH CAROLINA -- A 59-year-old Orangeburg man has been convicted of two counts of ill-treatment of animals after dozens of dogs were found, with some roaming atop his house.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported that Orangeburg County Chief Magistrate Derrick Dash found Joe Hendrix had not properly cared for more than 50 dogs and one cat.
The malnourished and ill animals were found on his property in August. Another dog was found there two months later. Many were nursed back to health, but some had to be put down.
Hendrix was ordered to pay $1,300 within 30 days or spend 60 days in jail. A civil judgment of more than $9,000 was also ordered against him. Officers testified medical care for the animals cost more than $49,000.
