Shoestring now sits battered and bruised in a Lincoln hospital room. She underwent surgery number 3 Friday - the pit bull bit so hard, it left teeth marks on her bone.
The pain is unbearable, but Shoestring says what hurts even more is that no one would help her during the attack.
"Full grown adults standing there, not doing nothing and my son is the only one still trying to save my life," Shoestring said.
Shoestring and her 4-year-old son, Hayden were both attacked Monday while visiting her boyfriend's father and girlfriend in Grand Island.
The pit bull first came after Hayden in the backyard. He screamed and that's when Shoestring came to her son's defense. But the dog turned on her, not letting up even after she ran across the street for help.
"He just came over and started tearing me up again and my son was just screaming and crying. His face was all bloody," Shoestring said.
She was airlifted to Bryan West that night while Hayden was taken to a Grand Island hospital for surgery on his face. Both are happy just to be alive and were finally reunited Thursday.
"He put his hand on my face and said you don't cry no more mom. I'm gonna take care of you. I say, you're my hero and he goes, yup. I got big muscles," Shoestring said.
The male pit bull has since been put down. There was a female pit bull in the backyard, but she never joined the attacks.
