4/16/13: Abused dog's former owner found guilty of animal cruelty

TEXAS -- The former owner of an abused dog was found guilty of animal cruelty on Monday.

Priscilla Bledsoe, 60, was arrested in December 2011 and charged with cruelty to her 4-year-old Great Dane named Claire . The jury in the case recommended a suspended sentence, and that Bledsoe serve six months of probation.

On Nov. 11, 2011, a Bastrop County animal control officer responded to a call about a dog injured in the roadway, the arrest affidavit said. When the officer arrived he located the dog curled up on a couch on the porch of Bledsoe’s home.

When Claire was rescued from the home in Smithville, the animal control employee thought she was dead.

Claire weighed only 70 pounds, half of what she should weigh. The affidavit also said the dog had no hair, open sores, red swollen skin, swollen feet, dirty and oozing ears, fleas, ticks, and smelled of yeast. She was also deaf and 75 percent blind.

Six months after being rescued and nursed back to health by Big Dog Rescue, she was adopted Tom and Kelly Rott of Austin .
