OHIO -- A woman and her daughter face several charges after five emaciated horses were rescued from their property last month.
Kelly Barclay and her daughter Jessica Barclay both face six charges each of cruelty to animals in Chardon Municipal Court.
“They were eating the wooden fence posts on the property, and the run-in shed that they had. You could see there’s like cookie cutters taken out of the wood where they were eating the wood. They were eating their own leavings because they just didn’t have enough to survive,” said Humane Officer Christian Courtwright.
The charges were filed earlier this week, and their arraignments have been set for May 20.
According to the Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village, complaints started pouring in at the end of February about the horses’ deteriorating state.
When agents responded, the two suspects were unwilling to hand over their animals, said Christian Courtwright with Rescue Village.
Finally, the horses were seized on March 2.
Under veterinary care, they were treated for “visible injuries” and severe neglect.
