Owner Says Shih-Tzu Puppy Attacked At Dog Park

OHIO -- A trip to the dog park turned into a trip to an emergency veterinarian for a puppy.

Eight-month-old Shih-Tzu, Maggie, is hanging on after her owner says she was attacked by another dog at the Brooksedge Bark Park.

“She is just a tiny little puppy; it just tore my heart up,” said owner Matt Austin.

Austin says that on Saturday, he and his girlfriend took Maggie and their other dog to the Westerville dog park.

Austin said he unleashed his dogs and let them into the small dog area of the park. He said, a few moments later a dog approached Maggie and began biting her. He said Maggie hit her head on the concrete pretty hard.

“Her legs went completely stiff and she couldn't move her head at all. I picked her up put her in my car and ran up here to Med Vet,” Austin said.

According to a police report, the dog that attacked Maggie was an 18-month-old Rottweiler- Labrador mix.

Police didn't charge the owners because according to the report, there was not a violation of criminal law.

The sign outside the park states dog owners are responsible for any damage or injuries caused by their dogs.

“It takes time for the nervous system to heal before it can fully recover and her body is in that process now. Like I said, she has dramatically improved from 48 to 72 hours ago,” said Dr. Roger Hostutler.

The dog’s owner said his dogs were in the area of the park designated for small dogs.

Westerville Police did inform animal control officers of the incident and we're told they are looking into it.
