NORTH CAROLINA -- Rock Hill Police shot and killed another pit bull Tuesday night after it charged at an officer checking on vacant apartment units.
At about 9 p.m., a police officer and a Rock Hill real estate broker were on Green Street checking vacant housing units at Whitgreen Apartments when a “golden colored” dog ran toward them barking, according to a Rock Hill Police report. The officer, who wrote in the report that he knew the dog to be aggressive, drew his pepper spray in case the dog came closer, but the canine kept its ground.
As the broker checked one apartment, a brown female pit bull charged toward the police officer, barking, the report states. When the officer drew his gun, the dog initially stopped but soon charged at the officer.
The officer fired three shots at the pit bull, which slumped to the ground and began coughing up blood, the report states. The officer realized the dog, which was still alive, was suffering from “significant pain” and shot it again to “mitigate its suffering,” the report reads.
The dog then died.
When animal control officials got to the scene, a woman, 38, arrived and said the dog belonged to her. She told police that it had been chained at the back of her house, but had broken the collar.
The woman was cited for animal-at-large.
Last Friday, a Rock Hill Police officer shot and killed a pit bull that chased an elderly man in his yard, attempted to bite an animal control officer and tried to attack several children.
