Kansas: Two-Day-Old Severely Injured After Attack By Family's Pit Bull

COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS -- A two-day-old infant girl suffered serious injuries after being attacked by a pit bull Thursday morning in Coffeyville.

Police responded to the dog attack at 1807 South Walnut and found the infant had been attacked and “severely injured” by her family’s pit bull, the Coffeyville Police Department said in a news release.

The baby girl was taken to a local hospital with “life threatening” injuries and then flown to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She is currently listed in stable condition.

[Note: The Pit Bulls ripped off one of her legs. Police returned looking for her leg.]

Two of Justin Forstad and Sorene Forstad's five pit bulls -- including the one that attacked the infant -- have been euthanized, Police Chief Tony Celeste said.

No further information has been released.

Although this is about a Pit Bull, which attacks more than any other dog, this particular story could have involved any other breed. Never, ever leave an infant alone - even for a second - with a dog, no matter how small or "sweet" the dog seems to be. Although it's usually larger dogs that attack and it's very rare for a small dog to attack an infant, it has happened. Dogs as small as Dachshunds and Pomeranians have attacked infants, chewing off their toes, genitals. One infant even died from being attacked by a very small dog while his exhausted mother was sleeping.
