5/13/13: Dog bite victim wants action

CANADA -- A Milton woman, who was attacked by a dog as she walked around her neighbourhood last month, says she is now afraid to leave her home for a short stroll to enjoy the fresh air.

Bozena Kolankiewicz, 66, who lives with her daughter Danuta Choma in central Milton, received seven stitches after a dog, described as an Akita, attacked her on the arm, ripping her skin.

Halton Regional Police confirm the women filed a police report about the April 22 incident, and it has since been passed on to the Oakville and Milton Humane Society (OMHS) for investigation.

OMHS spokesperson Brenda Dushko said the case is being looked at and charges may be laid. She could not provide additional details because the incident is still under investigation.

Choma alleges the dog is still living with its owner.

The attack occurred when Kolankiewicz said she was walking along a sidewalk with her daughter in a Hawthorne Village neighbourhood around 4:30 p.m. The woman said a homeowner opened his garage door to make his way to the backyard. A dog ran out of the garage toward Kolankiewicz, jumping up onto her legs. She said she fell backward but managed to get back up. The dog, according to Choma, continued to jump on the woman despite the homeowner and her mom yelling at the dog.

Choma said the dog put its jaw around her mother’s shoulder and moved down to her arm, where he broke the skin

“I was sure that this dog was going to kill me,” said Kolankiewicz, through her daughter, because she doesn’t speak English. “The dog biting was so painful that I just wanted it to be over with as soon as possible.

“I couldn’t stand the pain anymore. It was nothing like I have ever experienced in my life.”

The owner of the dog rushed to the scene and pulled the dog off Kolankiewicz, who was bleeding and distraught. He took the two women to Milton District Hospital where he stayed with them for four hours, while Kolankiewicz was treated.

Choma added a witness driving by the incident stopped to offer assistance as well.

Kolankiewicz wants the dog euthanized.

“She is still very scared to leave the house and avoids any physical activity,” said Choma. “She is constantly taking medications since the day it happened.

“Three times a week, we go for treatment where she gets her bandages changed and wounds checked.”
