74 animals rescued from Southeast Portland home with feces-covered floors

OREGON -- More than 70 animals living in apparent filth were rescued from a Southeast Portland home Thursday.

Portland police responded to the home in the 13200 block of Southeast Harold Street for a welfare check and discovered 65 poodles, five cats and four birds, according to Multnomah County Animal Services.

Animal control officers were called and they took the pets to the county's animal services shelter at 1700 W. Columbia River Highway in Troutdale. The floors of the home were covered with feces, animal services said.

The female homeowner intended to operate a poodle rescue. But the 80-year-old soon became overwhelmed and couldn't care for all of them when her husband moved to assisted living, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman. No criminal charges have been filed and she is being helped by Multnomah County Aging Services.

Ownership of all but two of the dogs were surrendered by the homeowner, animal services said.
The rescued pets could be put up for adoption as early as next week. Their conditions were not released.
