NEW JERSEY -- A large-breed dog attacked its owner Tuesday night, causing an arm injury so severe the person had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital, police said.
The dog, an English mastiff, bit the adult on the arm at a home on Taylor Drive at 6:03 p.m., according to Sgt. Patrick Cook, a spokesman for the police department.
The name of the injured person and the hospital were not available, Cook said. Details about the attack also were sketchy.
“From what I understand, the dog was recently adopted,” Cook said.
The English mastiff can weigh between 150 to 250 pounds, according to Wikipedia.
The dog was taken to an animal shelter in the township after the attack, Cook said.
The reason for the attack is still being investigated. Cook said police believe the dog may have been eating at the time.
“It appears it may have been a food-aggression issue,” Cook said.
Cook did not know the extent of the dog bite to the adult’s arm.
“It was severe enough that first aid (units) called for a helicopter,” Cook said.
Several officers responded to the call including paramedics and Brick Police Emergency Medical Services.
The helicopter landed at Angela M. Hibbard Park on Drum Point Road and then took the victim to the hospital, he said.
