Hancock man charged after allegedly beating dog unconscious

MAINE -- A local man has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals after he allegedly beat his dog last week until it lost consciousness, according to the local animal control officer.

Charged in the case is Jeremy Fowler, 36, of Hancock, but few other details about the incident have been released. Marie Zwicker, the town’s animal control officer, confirmed on Friday that Fowler is accused of severely beating the animal.

“He [allegedly] was observed beating his dog, and the dog was unresponsive,” Zwicker said.

The animal control officer added that the incident allegedly occurred on April 26 and that Fowler is due to appear in Ellsworth District Court on May 21.

Aggravated cruelty to animals is a class C charge punishable by up to five years in prison and a possible fine of up to $5,000.

Zwicker declined to release other details such as where in Hancock the incident occurred or whether Fowler still has custody of the dog. Other details likely will be released at Fowler’s May 21 court appearance, she said.

She said that Ellsworth Police Department and Maine State Police assisted her in responding to the complaint.
