PENNSYLVANIA -- A five-week-old kitten soaked in petrol before being set on fire in New Jersey is thought to be recovering slowly.
Justin was found in Philadelphia at the end of April and is currently being cared for by Animal Alliance, said animal protection organisation Pennsylvania SPCA.
The one-pound kitten is reported to be doing "remarkably well - but he's not out of the woods yet", Animal Alliance executive director Anne Trinkle told NJ.com.
Quick-thinking Samaritan, named as Damaris Alcala took off a coat, and smothered the flames, saving the animal's life. He told 6abc.com:
“It was crying when I was picking him up, but when I moved him in the back, he was screaming."
The burned kitten is now being treated by veterinarians in New Jersey after suffering from second and third degree burns on its back and head.
According to Trinkle, most of Justin's ears will have to be removed, and badly-burned splotches on his back will remain bald.
Crown Veterinary Specialists and Emergency has said that Justin is "doing great":
“He loves to eat. He is using the litter box like a good kitty. He has become interested in playing with his toys. Thank you all for caring. Justin is a sweetheart! It is our pleasure to care for him!"
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward of as much as $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the attack.
“This is the latest in a disturbing string of animals apparently being intentionally lit on fire,” said Sarah Speed, Pennsylvania state director for The HSUS. “This depraved act of cruelty will not be tolerated, and we hope this reward will encourage anyone with information to come forward and help bring the perpetrator to justice.”
