Columbus Teen Attacked by Dog at Wesley Heights Elementary School

GEORGIA -- A Columbus teen received nine stitches after being bitten by a pit bull at Wesley Heights Elementary School Wednesday night.

Nyelah Greene's mother says her 13-year-old daughter was playing at the school with friends when two pit bulls ran across the street from a neighbor's house and attacked the girl on the face, arm, legs and hips.

With children out for the summer Safe Kids says they should practice safety around dogs.

"They should definitely look out for if a dog is with a person and if they do see a strange dog they really need to report it to the authorities," says Christy Hubbard of Safe Kids.

Safe Kids Columbus says when children are in parks they should never approach a stray dog or pet any dog without the owner's permission.

Hubbard says dogs can look friendly but may not be.

"Children love animals and they love anything from squirrels to dogs," Hubbard explains. "So we always recommend children never touching an animal or approaching an animal without asking an adult first."

Dog bites can have consequences that can be very severe.

"Wild animals and dogs can have rabies and rabies can be very dangerous and deadly and that's why it's important to stay away from animals that you do not know," says Hubbard.

Mrs. Greene says her daughter got about 15 stitches last night. Seven of those stitches are on her face. She is recovering at home with her family and would not speak to News 3 on camera.
