The victims, a 57-year-old woman and 53-year-old man, were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where both underwent surgery. Police, who did not identify the victims, described their injuries as severe but not life-threatening.
Police responded to 300 Highland Drive around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a pit bull attacking two adults. Officers found the woman in an apartment entryway, suffering from multiple bite wounds.
As they approached, the dog ran down from an upper landing and again "went after" the woman, according to a news release.
Officers were able to distract the dog to keep it from attacking the woman. Then the dog turned on the officers, and one used a Taser to deter it. The dog was later found dead. After police began helping the woman, they found the man suffering from multiple bite wounds.
Police spokesman Lt. T.J. Smith said the victims were pet-sitting the pit bull and another dog. The attack occurred while they were walking the animals. "Some type of commotion took place, possibly between the dogs, and eventually between the victims and the pit bull," he wrote in an email. "We have no idea what set the dog off, however."
The pit bull was described as an unaltered male between 2 and 3 years old.
