NORTH CAROLINA -- A 76-year-old Monroe woman and her dog are recovering from injuries suffered Monday when they were attacked by a pit bull, according to police.
The attack was reported about 2 p.m. in the 600 block of Engleside Street, Monroe police say.
She told police that she had taken her dog out of the car and sat it on the front steps of the home when a black and gray pitbull came from around back and starting attacking her dog.
The pitbull starting biting the smaller dog and then bit the woman on her leg several times.
The woman used a stick to try and get it away from her.
The woman suffered several puncture wounds and was treated at CMC-Union.
Monroe Animal Control took possession of the pit bull, police say. Investigators say the dog’s owner handed the dog over to Monroe officials, who will euthanize the animal after a 10-day rabies quarantine.
