St. Pete woman arrested after Great Dane found dead

FLORIDA -- Police on Sunday night arrested a St. Petersburg woman they say abandoned a Great Dane, which died after being left alone for 11 days.

Alyssa Anderson, 24, faces one count of felony animal cruelty. Her bail was set at $5,000.

Anderson had been staying at 3520 71st St. N. in St. Petersburg, where a Great Dane named Diesel was found dead Sunday, said St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz. A neighbor discovered the dog after smelling a foul odor coming from the house, Puetz said.

Police officers found the door unlocked, went inside and found the dog, which had been dead for at least a week and was decomposing, said Puetz.

The landlady called Anderson, who called police, Puetz said. Anderson, who has a child, acknowledged she had not been at the house for a week and four days but said someone named Mary was supposed to care for the animal, Puetz said.

She wasn't sure, though, if the person's name was really Mary and could provide no further information about her, Puetz said.
