Chickasaw County Sheriff won't comment about suspected animal neglect case

Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office mission and value statements: We maintain the trust of the citizens by being honest, compassionate and consistent in our beliefs and actions. We hold ourselves responsible to the highest standards of personal and professional ethical conduct. We are dedicated to professionalism, service and moral courage.

IOWA -- Last month, folks in rural Fredericksburg were concerned about authorities ignoring a case of animal neglect.

In a statement after KWWL first aired a story about the suspected animal neglect, Chickasaw County Sheriff Todd Miller said eight dogs were found on a property located on 280th Street in Fredericksburg.

According to Miller's press release in mid-June, the dogs were deemed as having adequate shelter, sustenance and water.

The Sheriff's Office told KWWL last month it made plans to follow up with the owner in a week.

Chief Deputy Marty Hemann told KWWL on June 14th that the owner was given a week's notice to obtain medical records from a veterinarian for every dog on the property.
KWWL tried to follow up with the Sheriff's Office to see if those medical records were obtained.

Multiple phone calls to Miller over the past three weeks were not returned.

When KWWL reached Miller for comment Tuesday morning, he said he does not talk about ongoing investigations.

He refused to confirm if the owner had obtained vet records for the dogs on the property, only stating that the Sheriff's Office is "continuing to monitor the situation."

[This is very odd. Why would he be so defensive and clam up about what's going on out here? Do they not do police reports that are available to the press/public? Why would he purposely piss off everyone who just wants to make sure the animals are being cared for? Something is fishy in Chickasaw County...]
