MICHIGAN -- A pit bull was shot and killed by a resident Wednesday night after the pit bull attacked his much smaller dog while walking on a Muskegon street.
Police said the July 17 incident was reported around 7:45 p.m. while the man was out walking his dog in a residential neighborhood on the west side of the city.
To protect the man’s identity, police are not releasing the block where the incident occurred.
The Muskegon man was walking his small dog with a leash on a public sidewalk when a pit bull escaped a fenced-in yard in the area and charged them before attacking the small dog, police said.
The pit bull bit the smaller dog in the neck at which point the Muskegon man walking the smaller dog took out a .38 caliber pistol he had on him at the time and shot the pit bull twice, police said.
The pit bull ran a short distance and died, police said.
The pit bull was registered and licensed by its owner. The pit bull owner, a Muskegon woman, was cited for failing to contain a dangerous animal, per the city’s ordinance.
The man who shot the pit bull had a license to carry the pistol, according to the police report.
It wasn’t clear how badly the man’s dog was injured during the attack.
