First responders find pit bull attacking owner in Waveland

MISSISSIPPI -- A Waveland man was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after he was viciously attacked by his own dog. Investigators estimate the attack went on for 20 minutes before a police officer arrived and killed the animal.

Just before 5pm, first responders were called to a home on Harding Street to help a man they thought was having a heart attack. The crews were told to watch out for vicious dogs at the home. When the AMR crew arrived, they found a pit bull still attacking its owner.

Officials said the dog was latched onto the victim who was lying wounded on the ground. Only after a police officer killed the dog were medics able to finally get close enough to render aid.

Neighbors told investigators the victim was lying on the ground and appeared to be having medical issues. When someone tried to check on him, the pit bull leapt off of the balcony and began attacking its owner.

Animal control took four other dogs from the property that they said were living in deplorable conditions, and appeared to suffer from malnutrition.

The victim's name is still being withheld until family members can be reached. His condition is not known.
