Escaped pit bull injures 3 kids, lunges at 66-year-old woman in Laurel

MARYLAND -- An escaped pit bull attacked a 66-year-old woman before injuring three kids in Laurel Wednesday, according to a release.

Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Dameron South in Laurel at 11:27 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a dog attack.

Police discovered that a 2-year-old pit bull terrier had attacked three kids ages 2,4 and 6, while they were out walking with their babysitter. The pit bull caused minor bite and scratch wounds.

The babysitter was able to retreat with the kids back into their home in the 300 block of Dameron South. The pit bull had escaped earlier that morning because of a left open fence gate, police determined.

Further investigation yielded that the same pit bull had lunged at a 66-year-old woman taking out her trash earlier that morning

The woman suffered minor head and knee injuries. The woman’s sister fought the dog off with a broom, according to the release.

Police contacted Animal Control for assistance. Animal Control personnel determined that the dog did not have a current rabies vaccination.

The three children were treated with first aid or taken to Laurel Regional Hospital. The senior woman refused medical treatment.

The animal was taken into custody to an Animal Control facility for further investigation and quarantine.

The investigation was handed over to Animal Control.
