INDIANA -- A Mishawaka police officer shoots a pit bull three times, after being bitten in both legs.
It happened Sunday night at Battell Park, where the officer says he was investigating possible drug use.
Patrolman Dave Ruiz was called out to look for a group of teens possibly smoking marijuana. He was attacked and bitten on both legs by a pit bull mix and in self-defense shot the dog three times.
“While he was making contact with the actual subjects, the dog came out of nowhere and bit him,” says Lt. Tim Williams from the Mishawaka Police Department.
The group of teens in question, say the officer ran up to them, yelling at them to get down on the ground with his hand on his holster.
The teens say they didn't have time to grab the dog's leash and were fearful for their own safety. That's when the 14-year-old female pit bull, Asia, was shot.
Witness Travis Diemer says, “As he's taking his gun out, he was pointing, acting like he was going to shoot us. He (the dog owner) had no choice but to let the dog go because he was going to shoot us."
No arrests were made and no marijuana was found.
Ruiz was bitten on the side of the leg and on the inside of his other leg.
He was treated and released. No word on whether he required any stitches.
