Murphy man charged with abusing, starving horses

NORTH CAROLINA -- A Cherokee County man faces animal cruelty charges after authorities found several animals including three horses that appeared to be near death at a residence on Harshaw Road.

One of the horses died, according to authorities.

Jan David Barnett, 51, was arrested on "on felony and misdemeanor cruelty to animal charges as well as causing the death of an animal by starvation," according to a news release from Cherokee County Sheriff Keith Lovin.

"Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division visited the Harshaw Road address and found three horses, a pony, and a mule that were indeed near death," according to the news release.

"Investigators served a search warrant and attempted to rescue the animals, but unfortunately one died the next day."

Officials say the other two horses, pony and mule are in the care of an animal rescue organization.
Barnett was placed under a $5,000 unsecured bond.
