Suffering from a ghastly head wound and locked inside a pet carrier, the little dog was discovered late Friday afternoon inside a Kansas City trash container.
The Kansas City Pet Project is now providing medical care for the purebred shih tzu, who they think is about 2 years old.
An X-ray revealed that the dog, dubbed Ace by his rescuers, suffered some type of puncture wound to his skull, according to Tori Fugate, director of marketing and development for KC Pet Project.
Veterinarians have said his prognosis is fair, but it’s too early to know the extent of the damage, Fugate said.
“It was a pretty significant head injury,” she said. “We’re really, really hopeful he’ll make a full recovery.”
A worker at a construction project near 63rd Street and Swope Parkway found the dog in the commercial trash container about 4:30 p.m. Friday.
He did not have a collar or microchip with owner identification, according to Fugate.
When he was found, he was “very still” and his eyes were twitching. On Saturday, Fugate said he was moving around, a good sign.
She expects Ace will have to spend a significant amount of time in foster care and will require a large amount of medical care.
