Tinton Falls man convicted of animal cruelty after using power tool, duct tape on dog

NEW JERSEY -- A township man was convicted on animal cruelty charges, after duct taping a dog’s mouth closed and using a power tool on its nails, authorities said.

Joseph A. Valentino, 41, of Tinton Falls has to pay a $1,000 fine and can not handle or possess an animal for five years, said Victor “Buddy” Amato, chief humane law enforcement officer at the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Valentino duct taped the muzzle of a 1-year-old bull mastiff named Stitches, in front of the dog’s owners, Ian and Mary Robertson of Canada.

He also attempted to trim Stiches’s paw nail with a Dremel power tool, causing the dog to get upset, Amato said. Amato said it was a tool that could be used to cut a chain off a fence.

“With that kind of dog, if you duct tape its mouth like that, you could cut off its air supply by restricting its nasal passage,” Amato said.

This action caused the dog to go into a panic and choked the dog to the point where it turned blue, he said.
