Rhode Island: Two small dogs attacked by pit bull in Pawtucket. Is Animal control going to do anything since Pawtucket has a ban on pit bulls???

RHODE ISLAND -- Ray Clement says it happened just down the street from his Pawtucket home.

A family friend was walking his two dogs, Petey, a white Jack Russell mix, and Holly, a black mini pincher, while he was at work Tuesday evening.

A woman and her pit bull were at a house across the street. According to Ray the pit bull "got away from her grasp, charged across the street, attacked the white dog (Petey) you saw earlier, pinned him to the ground, was shaking him, biting his neck very, very badly."

According to Ray the attack could have been much worse for Petey had it not been for Holly. That's because when the pit bull was attacking Petey, he says Holly started barking at the dog, who then dropped Petey and turned its attention on her.

Ray described Holly's injuries to NBC 10 explaining "he bit her through the face, she's got a hole underneath her jaw where tooth went through, she's got a broken jaw."

Animal Control in Pawtucket says the pit bull was up to date on rabies vaccine, but per state law, its been quarantined while the investigation continues.

Animal control told NBC 10 that the dog's owner is from Woonsocket and told police she was visiting Pawtucket with the pit bull, which is prohibited.

In fact, despite a new state law that prohibits a city or town from outlawing a breed of dog or cat, the city is still enforcing its ban on pit bulls, something Clement supports.

More than two thousand dollars in vet bills already, Clement says he'll pursue restitution civilly from the pit bull owner, and animal control tells me they're still investigating what charges may be filed.
