Bear cubs have fun on slide in Roxbury backyard

NEW JERSEY -- You don’t have to be human to enjoy a swing set, as photos taken by a Succasunna family show.

The Vanadia family watched last month as a mother bear and her two cubs explored their backyard, with the little ones riding down the slide, according to Chris Vanadia.

“The bears were in the backyard eating the trash when my wife saw them as she pulled into the garage,” Vanadia said.

In the garage, Chris, his wife, Maryann, and their two daughters, Gabrielle and Michelle, were able to watch them safely though a window, Vanadia said. Michelle took more than 70 pictures of the bears as they made their way through the family’s backyard.

Both cubs were playing on the slide together, but by the time Michelle got the camera out, only one remained, Vanadia said.

“My daughters and wife were freaked out when we first saw them, but after seeing them play on the slide, they thought they were cute,” said Vanadia, who added that the mother bear had a tracking collar and was tagged on both ears.

“From what I have been told, the three bears have been spotted in Roxbury numerous times,” he said.
