Child in hospital after dog bite in south Edmonton

CANADA -- A child was taken to hospital Thursday afternoon after being bitten by a family dog at a south Edmonton home.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at a home near 78th Street and 14th Avenue SW, in the Summerside neighbourhood, said Edmonton Fire Rescue spokesman Michael Tucker.

“It was a report of a dog bite and it was on the upper body,” Tucker said. The child suffered injuries that are not life threatening, he said.

City police and paramedics also responded to the two-storey home.

A City of Edmonton animal control officer led what appeared to be an American Bulldog away from the home. A child’s pink and white tricycle sat on the home’s front porch.

Resident Jairo Toledo said he often sees his neighbours walking the dog around the area, which is home to many families.

“I’ve never noticed it being aggressive,” he said. “I’ve noticed other neighbours out here with their dogs and I’ve never noticed any aggression. It’s a shock.”

It’s not clear what will happen to the dog taken from the home. City of Edmonton animal control could not be reached for comment.
