FLORIDA -- A 39-year-old man is facing criminal charges after Animal Care and Control investigators say they found his two puppies emaciated, starving and ill.
Jeremy Jones of Loxahatchee was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail earlier this week on several charges of cruelty to animals and was released today after posting a $6,000 bond, jail records show.
Animal control investigators received an anonymous call in May complaining of two pit bull puppies who were emaciated and could barely stand. One of the puppies had a knot on its head and a swollen face, according to a probable-cause affidavit.
An officer with animal control went to Jones’ home, but the puppies were not found. The officer saw two adult dogs who appeared to be healthy, just not in a proper shelter. The officer left the scene and decided to plan a trip back.
Hours later officers received another anonymous complaint saying the puppies appeared to be dying. The caller gave a better description of where the puppies were kept and an officer and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the home.
At the home, the investigators saw a female tan Catahoula puppy lying in the driveway. The puppy had a large growth on her head and had a swollen face. A second puppy — a male, tan and white Catahoula — was found staggering while walking and also appeared emaciated.
Investigators talked to Jones by phone and he said he has had the puppies for about a month and didn’t give them names. When asked if he’s brought the puppies to a vet, Jones said he planned on doing that later that day.
He decided to surrender the dogs and gave animal control permission to take them from his home, the affidavit says.
A veterinarian from animal control examined the puppies and found they were both severely underweight. The puppy with the bump on her head was named Ginger. Ginger also had a blood-filled wound in her mouth causing pain when she ate.
The second puppy was named Riley and was found covered in fleas, the affidavit says. When given food, he showed a “voracious appetite,” investigators reported.
The veterinarian aggressively treated both puppies and within a month Ginger gained 13 pounds and Riley 19 pounds.
