House condemned, woman charged after 40 live and dead cats found at home

VIRGINIA -- Police officers wearing hazardous materials suits and air tanks on Wednesday removed almost four dozen live and dead cats from a single-wide mobile home on the island’s southern end during a four-hour operation.

Lynley Lavern Beck, 61, of Chincoteague, was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals, both class one misdemeanors, after authorities were alerted by a local animal hospital about the rough condition of two cats Beck allegedly brought there.

“All the cats were transported to the Accomack County Animal Control facility,” said Chincoteague Police Chief Edward Lewis in a prepared release.

The home at 8271 Sea Bird Drive have been temporarily condemned by the town’s building and zoning officer, said Lewis.

Chincoteague police officers attempted to make contact at the residence and “were not able to get the owner to come to the door,” he said.

They obtained two arrest warrants for Beck and a search warrant for the property. Aiding in the search was the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division.

Officers removed more than 40 live cats and “several dead cats” from the premises, Lewis said.

Accomack Social Services responded to provide assistance at the scene and the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co. assisted.
