FLORIDA -- An Escambia County man is facing animal cruelty charges after two malnourished horses were seized from his property.
Marcus James McCreary, 41, of the 9000 block of Bowman Avenue in Cantonment, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on one charge of tormenting, depriving, mutilating or killing an animal, and one charge of causing cruel death, pain or suffering to an animal, according to his arrest report.
On Sept. 4, a passerby reported seeing a horse on Bowman’s property that was too thin and weak to stand, Diane Lowery, the president of Panhandle Equine Rescue said.
Members of Escambia County Animal Control responded to the call, and McCreary agreed at the animal control officers’ request to release control of the animals over to Panhandle Equine Rescue, Lowery said.
Lowery said she believed that the horses, Capona and Sweet Mary, would not have lived more than a few days if they had not been rescued.
“On a scale of one to nine, with nine being obese and five being average, Capona was a one,” Lowery said.
“I just don’t understand how someone could let this happen when they see the horses in their yard every day.”
McCreary has been released from Escambia Jail after posting $7,500 bond, according to jail records.
Lowery said the horses are being well care, and that they may be back to full strength within three or four months.
Donations toward Capona and Sweet Mary’s care can be made at panhandleequinerescue.org.
