Pa. man pleads guilty to abandoning hurt sheep

PENNSYLVANIA -- A local farmer has admitted to leaving his sheep to die after it was critically injured this month in a collision with a motorcycle.

Emmanuel Beiler, of Ronks, pleaded guilty this week to a single count of cruelty to animals and paid a $240.50 fine at District Judge Denise Commins' office.

The sheep, a large ram, was left paralyzed from the collision with the motorcycle before Beiler discarded it in a field, according to officials.

Keith Mohler, Human Society Officer for the state SPCA, said Beiler, when confronted, told him someone was to pick up the animal for butcher.

A passerby reported the injured sheep's location on Aug. 3. Mohler responded and found the sheep in a field by the accident scene in the 2700 block of Lincoln Highway East.

Mohler discovered the sheep was involved in the accident the night before and had been in the field for more than 24 hours.

"The sheep was still alive and in pain," Mohler said on Friday. "I had to put it down."

Mohler filed a count of cruelty to animals for failure to provide proper veterinarian care or appropriate euthanasia.

Beiler has other animals on his farm at 2725 Lincoln Highway East, but hasn't been charged with any other violations.
