Pit bull attacks dog, bites man

WISCONSIN -- A South Side La Crosse man suffered bites to his arm last week while trying to pry his dog from the jaws of a neighbor’s pit bull.

According to police reports, Gregory Loe was watering plants outside his home on East Avenue on Aug. 24 when the 2-year-old pit bull attacked his Maltese mix, Freddie, who was on a leash in the yard.

Karen Loe said she was inside when she heard a commotion. She ran to the window and saw her husband flailing.

“He was latched onto my dog’s neck and would not release,” she said. “I came out and started kicking the dog in the neck. He would not let go.”

Eventually a neighbor tossed Loe a 2x4.

“He had to crack that dog over the head 20 times with that [2x4],” Karen Loe said.

Loe suffered puncture wounds to his arm but did not need stitches. A veterinarian performed emergency surgery to repair torn muscles and a three-inch cut on his dog’s neck, Loe said.

“Physically he’s probably going to be OK,” she said. “Mentally we’re not sure yet.”

Paul Vang said he didn’t know how his dog got off the leash. He told police it was not the first time Louie had bitten someone, but that it was the first time he drew blood.

Vang was given a $177 citation for having a dog at large.
