Responders free husky trapped in recliner in Mount Arlington

NEW JERSEY -- A team of police, firefighters and an animal control officer worked overnight to free a husky’s paw that got wedged in an electric recliner and caused the panicked animal to bite its owners.

Borough police at 11:17 p.m. Wednesday received a call from a Schmitz Terrace resident who reported the family pet got its paw caught, Lt. Edward LaBruno said.

“The dog was very nervous and not cooperative at first. Its paw was jammed in the chair pretty good,” LaBruno said, explaining that in its fear and panic, the dog bit the mother and son in the household.

Hopatcong Animal Control Officer Dale Sloat responded and muzzled the dog and managed to calm it while firefighters worked on dismantling the chair. LaBruno said he believed that a family member was in the process of electronically reclining in the chair when the dog got his paw caught, and the mechanism wouldn’t move again to free it.

Firefighters cut cushions off the chair and removed the back so the husky could successfully be freed. Meanwhile, Sloat kept the dog under control, LaBruno said, estimating that the ordeal lasted a few hours.

Before they could call it a night, several responders underwent decontamination by members of the Picatinny Fire Department because of suspected bedbugs in the household, police said.
