Deformed cat and sick guinea pig abandoned by owners

MASSACHUSETTS -- A cat born with severely deformed front legs was found abandoned in the area of High Street and Arnold Road this month.

The cat, dubbed Sumner, is an adult male that walks on his forelegs because of the birth defect. He has some signs of arthritis, too.

"Sumner is not a cat who could have wandered off and gotten lost. Someone dumped him," Animal Control Officer Karen Fontneau said. "He is malnourished, was flea-infested, has an eye infection, lots of hair loss and severely deformed front legs."

The cat was found curled up beneath a tree with his head down and eyes nearly closed up from the infection and crying loud enough for a resident to hear him inside the home.

Despite the problems with his front legs, Fontneau said Sumner is a friendly cat. The animal shelter hopes to be able to put him up for adoption soon.

"This guy is so lovable and sweet, he lives for attention and is one of the easiest cats we have ever had for his eye meds," she said.

Fontneau said Sumner is not the only case of neglect she has seen recently.

On the same day the cat was found, Painter, an adult female guinea pig was found along a path in the woods near Showcase Cinema on Route 1.

"Whoever had her, neglected her. She was filthy, sick and so constipated she had to have a lot of pain."

The white and brown guinea pig was unable to move. She died this week.

If anyone has any information on the history of either animal or information on who abandoned them, call the animal shelter at 508-699-0128.
