CONNECTICUT -- A pit bull was shot dead early Monday after mauling his owner and the owner’s 71-year-old mother, police said.
The incident, which left blood splattered on the stairs and walls of a South Regent Street apartment building, was initially reported to police as an ongoing assault.
But when officers arrived they noticed the blood, and then, after pushing open the door of a third-floor apartment, the dog, on top of the man, biting him repeatedly.
“There’s no way they could have got the dog off of him,” Capt. James Ladeairous said. “So they dispatched him.”
The attack started minutes earlier, Ladeairous said, after the man, identified as Nicholas Salazar, 38, began arguing with his mother, whom police declined to identify.
The argument apparently prompted the pit bull to attack the woman, and when Salazar tried to tear the animal from his mother, the dog set upon him.
Salazar’s mother was taken to Greenwich Hospital with bite wounds to her arms, while Salazar was later taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with more severe wounds, including bite wounds on his arms, legs and feet.
Salazar was taken to the hospital, Ladeairous said, after initially “acting up” at the scene, becoming uncooperative with officers and emergency medical personnel.
He was later charged with obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor.
“He was acting really weird,” Ladeairous said.
The pair’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Neither Salazar nor his mother could be immediately reached for comment.
