55 counts of animal cruelty and dead dogs gets you probation in Ohio

OHIO -- A former guard-dog trainer has been sentenced to suspended jail time after he pleaded guilty in Fairfield County Municipal Court to animal cruelty.

Cory W. Dewberry was sentenced to 360 days in jail after he pleaded guilty on Oct. 29 to two counts of animal cruelty, a second-degree misdemeanor. Judge David A. Trimmer then suspended the sentence, put Dewberry on five years of probation and ordered him to pay a $300 fine and have a mental-health evaluation. Dewberry is prohibited from owning an animal or running an animal-related business for five years.

Trimmer also sentenced him to 180 days in jail, suspended, and fined him $150 after he pleaded guilty to one count of abandoning animals, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Dewberry, 39, entered the pleas as part of a negotiated deal.

“I think he got off pretty light,” said county Humane Agency Officer Bill Huffman.

Dewberry was originally charged with 55 animal-cruelty counts and 15 animal-abandonment counts.

Huffman and deputies found dogs in filthy kennels without water when they raided the Dewberry Family K-9 Kennel in March. Dewberry operated the business from a rented home and land where he lived at 9280 Carroll-Northern Rd. in Liberty Township. He moved in with family in Columbus after authorities shut down the kennel.
