DELAWARE -- A Newark man has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty after wildlife enforcement agents found him with a Coopers hawk, pigeons and rabbits on his property.
43-year-old Steven Cheng is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, unlicensed trapping, and illegally trapping a hawk.
The hawk was confiscated and taken to Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark. Cheng was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, and is under orders to reduce the number of rabbits he has, as well as clean their cages and the pigeon cages regularly.
It is illegal to capture or possess a hawk without a special permit from DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife, and hawks are protected under federal and state laws.
