Pit bulls killed cat, bit cat owner, say Portsmouth police

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- A pair of pit bulls fatally mauled a cat that wandered into a fenced-in yard where the dogs were kept, before one of the dogs bit the cat owner when he went to rescue his pet, said police Sgt. Richard Webb.

The incident occurred Sunday at about 2 p.m. in the Maple Haven neighborhood, according to police.

Webb said it was there that the cat wandered into a neighbor's yard and was “attacked” by the two dogs, which were secured inside the fence.

The police sergeant said the cat owner was bit on a hand while retrieving his cat, which died while it was being driven to a veterinary hospital.

The cat owner reported the bite at about 3 p.m. and an ambulance was dispatched, but the man refused medical treatment, Webb said.
