Shepherds seized from owners by ISPCA

UNITED KINGDOM -- Sam and Sheba are a German Shepherd and a Shepherd cross that were surrendered into the care of the ISPCA after Inspector Karen Lyons responded to a call from a member of the public who was concerned for their welfare.

On arriving at the property in Co Sligo, Inspector Lyons found the dogs living in very poor conditions.

She commented “Both dogs were visibly stressed, Sheba was cowering and shivering in a corner and Sam was pacing the garden relentlessly, Their shelter was a broken down garden shed with an old filthy wet mattress. It was also immediately obvious that the dogs were severely underweight”.

The owners tried to blame their financial position as an excuse for the dogs condition but Inspector Lyons was not accepting that.

“I will not accept that anyone can turn a blind eye to two animals living in their in their back garden in such an appalling state. There is no excuse”.

Sam and Sheba were taken to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre where they found to be in an emaciated state. Sam weighed in at 18.00kg and Sheba at just 14.20kg.

“When I got the dogs back to the centre I could really see how extremely emaciated they were” added Inspector Lyons “but I could also see how affectionate they are, pushing their noses into your hand looking for some attention. Watching them eat it was very clear to me that these dogs had not had a decent meal in a very long time!”

A file is being prepared for the GardaĆ.
