Alabama: More dead dogs found at property of breeder Debra Jane Catledge, 53

ALABAMA -- Authorities said Thursday they found more animals on the property where they seized 122 small dogs two days before.

Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said investigators had obtained more information about the homeowner of 13330 Highway 72 in the Barton community and got a warrant to search the property.

The search turned up two more dead dogs, two live dogs, and illegal moonshine in a barn on the property, May said.

May said the woman who owns the property told investigators she had taken numerous dogs out of state and refused to give them the location.

Charge her with obstruction, which may be a felony - much more of a crime than the misdemeanor cruelty charges.

On Tuesday, animal control officers and deputies seized 122 live Yorkie and Pomeranian dogs found outside the home in the cold. They also found two dead dogs frozen to their wire cages.

The woman, who has not been identified [she has since been identified as Debra Catledge aka Debra Jane Catledge], is in the Tuscumbia City Jail on an investigative hold. The Colbert County district attorney said charges could be filed against her Friday.

Shelter director Judy Nichols said the dogs were signed over to the animal shelter by the owner. The dogs that were pregnant or had medical issues have gone to rescue groups. The remaining dogs will be up for adoption starting Friday afternoon.

The two dogs found today will be placed in foster homes as evidence against the homeowner, Nichols said.
