The Valencia County Sheriff's Office reports the 41-year-old woman had 12 dogs and was in a pen breaking ice in a water dish.
Something set the pit bull off, and it mauled her.
When the woman's son came home and found her body, he shot and killed the dog.
Her name has not yet been released.
Investigators are looking into whether the woman was running a dog shelter or if the animals were all her pets.
