NEW JERSEY -- A borough police officer shot and killed a pit bull that had been attacking its owner and keeping other family members away, authorities said.
Officers responding to reports of a dog attack at a home at W. 8th Avenue at 12:54 p.m. Monday found the 61-year-old owner on the floor, struggling with the pet, Lt. James Loprete said.
"Please shoot the dog. He's going to kill me," the owner told police, according to Loprete.
He said Officer Brian Brennan fired two shots, killing the dog.
Several other family members were in the home, including a seven-year-old boy, Loprete said, and "were in harm's way" because of the dog.
Loprete said the family had owned the pet for several years. The dog's age was unavailable.
The injured owner was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was treated for bites on his arms that were not life-threatening, Loprete said. Information was unavailable on whether the dog had a history of attacking people.
He said borough animal control officers removed the dog.
