Woman Charged After Breaking Into Ex-Boyfriend’s Home, Stabbing His Cat to Death

CALIFORNIA -- A 43-year-old Santa Maria woman was arrested on suspicion of burglarizing a home and stabbing a house cat to death with a large kitchen knife Thursday, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the home in the 4600 block of Hummel Drive in Orcutt around 3:30 p.m. after a man called authorities to report that his girlfriend, Nellie Marie Palacios, had gone into the home that she said belonged to her cousin and began removing paintings off the walls.

Palacios was detained in the yard after deputies arrived. Deputies then found the cat nearby in an igloo-style doghouse with fatal stab wounds.

The knife used in the alleged attack was located under the doghouse covered with blood and cat hair, according to the sheriff’s office.

Palacios said the cat attacked her and she was acting in self-defense, according to officials with the sheriff’s office.

An investigation determined that the home did not belong to her cousin, rather it was the home of her ex-boyfriend, according to officials with the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found several paintings and other items from the home in her car.

Palacios was arrested on charges of burglary and animal cruelty.

She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of scratches and then transported to the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Her bail was set at $50,000.
