Man charged with animal cruelty for starving his coonhounds

NEW YORK -- An Ontario County man is facing animal cruelty charges after two emaciated dogs were found.

According to the Ontario County Humane Society, Teddy R. Read, 45, of Gorham was charged Saturday with cruelty to animals and failure to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal.

The Humane Society and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office were involved in an animal cruelty investigation that began about Dec. 21 after Read’s blue tick coonhounds, a 6-year-old female named Molly, and a 3-year-old male named Gunner, were found to emaciated and malnourished at 4886 Arnold Road. They also had no food or water in the kennels they were being kept in, the Humane Society said.

On Saturday, Read was located by the Sheriff’s Office after a warrant for his arrest was obtained from Gorham Town Court. He was issued an appearance ticket to answer the charges at a later date.

A relative of Read’s agreed to foster the dogs after they received veterinary care. Both dogs continue to recover.
