CALIFORNIA -- A motorist in Mendocino County came across a horrifying sight Friday- two dogs attacking a man on the ground - but it turned out that he was already dead, authorities said.
The incident was reported at 10:40 a.m. when a driver saw what he believed to be a man being mauled by two dogs in a clearing beside the roadway on the 5000 block of North State Street in Calpella, said sheriff's Capt. Greg Van Patten.
An animal control officer arrived and saw a rottweiler and a pit bull standing over the man's body.
The officer yelled at the dogs to get their attention and the rottweiler "aggressively charged at the officer," Van Patten said. The officer fired his gun twice, hitting the dog at least once. The rottweiler ran a short distance and died.
The pit bull fled the scene and wasn't found.
The officer went back to the man and confirmed he was dead. Sheriff's and district attorney's investigators were summoned, and they determined it appeared the man did not die as a result of the animal attack, "although evidence of animal activity on the adult male's body was evident," Van Patten said.
The cause of the man's death is under investigation. His name wasn't released.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, and a necropsy on the rottweiler is planned. The owner or owners of the animals haven't been identified, Van Patten said.
