The woman lives in the area of Illinois and Perry in Spokane. Last Friday, March 28th, her stepson let their dog, a 150-pound, Bernese Mountain Dog outside in the front yard while he went to a nearby convenience store to get something to eat.
When he returned, he saw two pit bulls in their front yard trying to attack their dog who had managed to crawl under their porch to hide. He was able to scare the dog away and didn't think that their dog had actually been attacked.
Because their dog has so much fur, there was no visible blood and so it never occurred to the boy or his parents that their dog had been attacked.
Later that night, when the boy was going to bed, he mentioned to his parents that two pit bulls had tried to attack their dog. They didn't think much of it until they noticed the next day that their dog was being very lethargic and hadn't moved from the same spot for hours. They examined the dog more closely and saw they she had numerous bite marks all over her.
Immediately, the family called SCRAPS but were told that no one would be able to come look at their dog that day because of "overtime concerns" with employees. The next day, two days after the attack, SCRAPS came to their home, examined the dog and told them to take the dog to the vet but also said there was nothing they could do about the pit bulls because they hadn't actually killed an animal.
The dog was taken to the vet and had to undergo surgery. The vet reported that the dog had nearly 100 bite marks. The dog currently has four tubes in her to drain the fluids and is on antibiotics and pain medicine. The dog is also terrified to go outside and will only go outside to go to the bathroom if two adults go with her.
The woman who owns the Bernese Mountain Dog informed SCRAPS she had spoken with the daughter of the man who owns the pit bulls.
The daughter lives down the street and her dad occasionally stays with her. She said she knows her dad doesn't take good care of the dogs and that the pit bulls had killed her cat and tried to bite her as well.
SCRAPS says they are actively investigating this incident and are trying to talk an eye witness about the attack, but so far that witness has been difficult to track down.
The man who owns the dogs is homeless and stays at different locations around town. The woman whose dog was attacked is fearful that this will happen to another dog or worse, a child especially since the dogs aren't consistently kept in a yard.
